Summary:

When Joss was first writing season 5, Dawn was about twelve years old, and some people say this was what went wrong with the first few episodes. She was much too whiny for her age, and if they had stuck to her being younger it would have been OK.

Coming from a person who has a younger sister...no, it wouldn't have been. She still would've come off as whiny even at twelve.

What would've made a much more interesting character would be a little sister, age range 8 to 10, with similar characterization to Lilo in Lilo & Stitch. She was a child character written well, and her weirdness would've fit in the Buffyverse.

She would've felt drawn to Willow and Tara because of their magic, and Anya because of her own weirdness. Spike, in her eyes, would've been the coolest person ever. Xander probably would've been her least favourite person because of his demon hate.

Having her younger would also have made Buffy's need to protect her a lot more believable. The younger the character, the more helpless they become.

The challenge: write a much younger Dawn with different characterization - which somehow leads to a Spuffy relationship.

Summary: In which Dawn arrives in season 1, and instead becomes a weird but intelligent ten year old who thinks Spike is the best thing since sliced bread. Oneshot. Banner made by the amazingly talented DauntlessGrace!
Important Note: This is an old fic. My writing has since improved so please bear that in mind when reading.

Summary: Written for the October 2015 Challenge Month, in response to prompts posted by Tempestt and Mia Vaan. Complete at eight chapters.
Dawn is nine and three quarters. She is resilient, strange and sharp as a tack. She's a credit to her big sis. But she's just been kidnapped by one of the most notorious vamps of all time - Drusilla. Things look bad.
Enter Spike, her very unlikely hero.
Spike's relationship with Drusilla has been on the rocks since the Acathala debacle and the morsel in the crate is her double-edged gift to him: a chance to make things right, and a chance to be really bad. Kill the girl and make it hurt. But for some reason he. just. can't.
Instead, he tosses the niblet into the trunk of his Desoto and hits the road, leaving his one hundred year relationship in tatters, and grinding his reputation into the dust.
Buckle your seat belts nice and tight. We're in for a bumpy ride.
